Celestaphone Gloriously multifaceted instrumentally, and I absolutely adore the various use of sound effects throughout. Definitely had a soft spot for the crisp percussive sounds & field recordings used every so often. Not to mention the dash of goosebumps inducing accordion & harmonica use, as well as the piano ballads. Vocal performances sat splendid with the music, sonically great. Just a well crafted project. Runner up for favorite track would be "Goodbye Forever, Poinsettias" or "It Means the World". Favorite track: Traveling Through Time.

about

Credits:

Jonathon G. played the saw on "Senioritis Theme" and "What Are the Animals Thinking?"

Patrik S. played some of the accordion on "It Means the World" and I played the rest. But he played it better than me.

Daniel E. played the violin on "Senioritis Theme."

Some of the other things used on this album: Harmonica, recorder, chimes, rain stick, microtonal (busted) ukelele, banjo, lap harp, soda can. Boring instruments: guitars, a single piccolo snare drum, and synthesized emulations of instruments such as bassoons and glockenspiels. Big fan of unusual timbres.

The album cover is a painting my great-great-grandfather made. He made a lot of beautiful paintings.

Other Credits:

My sister's middle school orchestra, the high school choir, the Schnitzel Platz restaurant's polka band, a mariachi group on the radio, and my church's Good Friday service also appear sporadically throughout.

Track Name: Harmonica Song
We're pioneers
of a strange and new frontier
We may end up dead and gone
on this trail less travelled on
Track Name: Jimmy Versus the Guinea Worm
"What is your worst fear?" she said
I had to make up my mind
And once I'd taken my time
I chose getting buried dead

The sun was shining so bright
I was in my Easter best
She wore a yellow dress
She said my brain wasn't right

That's when I started to run
Her survey was getting harder
I ran far away, to Plains, GA
The birthplace of Jimmy Carter

So I knelt before the giant smiling peanut statue
And I prayed that you would hear me pray
And I thought about how Jimmy vanquished the Guinea Worm
People put him down and he only served one term

But y'know, he's done some real good things
So I knelt before the peanut
And I prayed that I would learn to pray
To pray again
Track Name: Goodbye Forever, Poinsettias
Goodbye forever, poinsettias
I know I'll never see you again
It's sad but true
and there's nothing I can do
Oh, I can't hold on now...
Oh, I can't hold on...
Track Name: Traveling Through Time
Traveling through time
You've gotta know what you're doing
In an ancient Japanese imperial court
I-S-E-N-O-U-M-I
I-S-E-N-O-U-M-I
I-S-E-N-O-U-M-I
I-S-E-N-O-U-M-I
I-S-E-N-O-U-M-I
Track Name: School is Ditching Me
I didn't participate in senior ditch day
It just seemed unnecessary
After all, school is ditching me

I didn't want to partake in senior ditch day
I felt it would be redundant
After all, school is ditching me
Track Name: There in Spirit
I guess this means the end
although I wanted much more time
I'll try to be satisfied with what I had

Sometimes get there in spirit
It's so pretty
Some time get there in spirit
It's so pretty

I guess this means farewell
although parting is such sweet sorrow
We've been here on borrowed time
It's overdue

Sometimes get there in spirit
It's so pretty
Some time get there in spirit
It's so pretty
Track Name: Days are Through
Night is short-term
Summer slow burn
Didn't mean to fall this far
Life is long-term
And I hate worms
So put me in a cookie jar

You stand up for your ideas
You stand up for your ideals
I remember how that feels
You wanna tear down old Levittown houses
and put up something new
I'm gonna tear up
Your style inspires
but my bulldozing days are through

First-grade book fair
Sure is good there
Riding on naivety highs
Girls with long hair
Boys with blonde hair
Ditching pools to swim in sky

Up for your ideas
You stand up for your ideals
I remember how that feels
You wanna smash all the old cookie cutter houses
and plant a nicer view
How bright your youth and your attitude
but my bulldozing days are through

Now I get so sleepy
The thoughts in my brain rise
up to the top of my head
Like a goldfish in a bowl that will
teach a child the meaning of the word "dead"

A life of capitulation
I lost all my motivation
I tried hard but got impatient
City hall stands tall and it never falls,
no matter what you do
I gave it my all but it never falls
It's sad but it's also true

You battery
Your wealth is filth
You go to Hell
and kneel
Track Name: High On Life
I'm high on life. I need a designated driver.
Track Name: It Means the World
It means the world to me
when I'm with you
When you're gone, I'm gloomy
cuz I miss you

But when you come back
I'm so, so glad
I love you
I love you

It means the world to me
when I see you
When you're trapped, I truly
wish I could free you

But when you come back
I'm so, so glad
I love you
I love you
Track Name: She Sells Seashells
She sells seashells, trying to provide a stable income
for her family which includes three kids
but she's having trouble because the economy is so rough
Her husband has taken two jobs
Still it just isn't enough
Won't you buy a seashell?
It'll make you feel good
No one wants a seashell
(This is a beach town)
Yes, they're for free on the beach
No one is going to pay for something that is free on the beach
She is royally screwed
unless of course she somehow snatches all of the seashells...
Now the whole beach is barren
and business is booming
Track Name: What Are the Animals Thinking?
As for me and my fellow human beings,
we're not always quite on speaking terms
because sometimes I can't find the right words
And when this occurs, I run away
and I go for a warm walk in the woods
and wonder what are the animals thinking?
What would they say if they could?

On my way....I discovered
ten tired terracotta soldiers
huddled 'round a portable DVD player
watching "Casablanca" over and over

They seemed bewitched but affable enough
I asked them "WWJD?"
They said "He sure wouldn't act like you"
It was true, so I ran away
and I went down the Great Western Trail
and wondered what are the animals thinking?
Do they take note when I fail?

On my way....I discovered
my old school was closed for summer
I snuck in, the hallways were eerie
Empty echoes and no others

It was too real, so I left and went to the field
Yellow weeds were trying to sing to me
I saluted their tireless devotion
Then I floated home, tracing chalk lines
and I heard the birds' small morning song

And wondered what are those animals singing?
Can they sense when a storm is coming?
Track Name: Like So Many
I'm getting just what I deserve
for living in first-person
It's painful to have to observe
My condition only worsens
You wouldn't believe what I've heard
in the gossip circles
The rumor is I've lost my nerve
and it's true
I've been hiding in my room
Bed sheets turned into a fort

I want to drown
all these sinking feelings
They have got me down
on the ground
I'm kneeling

Like so many I know, I am confused
What am I doing? What did I do? Oh, no

And I'm not afraid to admit
I am scared out of my wits
I don't know what to make of it
I don't know what to do about anything
Oh, so I'm singing my song
and I'm trying to make things right
I've been in the dark for so long
I need you to help guide me
You, to help guide me to the light

Like so many I know, I am confused
What am I doing? What did I do? Oh, no
Track Name: John's Heart Giveaway
Everyone in this town's lining up for John's heart giveaway
Track Name: Hilarity Ensues
Uncle Andy took a lot of drugs
Now he thinks that there are little bugs
crawling underneath his skin
Now the real fun can begin

As he's rolling all across the floor
There's a denim jacket to explore
We'll search its pockets for candy and more

Dig for loot, I've located his wallet
Inside there is a whatchamacallit
Oh, that's right, it's called a "driver's license"

Maybe with this license, the police will let us drive
("I may look eight, officer, but I'm really thirty-five")
We could go for a ride in the countryside
Go for a drive, you and I

Maybe find a farm with rabbits to pet
Or maybe even go overseas
(We just have to find his keys...)
Suddenly Mom catches us
and says that
the funny pink stamp
with the smiling cat face
is not candy
Track Name: Were You There (Traditional)
Were you they when they crucified my Lord?
Oh-oh-oh-oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Oh-oh-oh-oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?

Were you there when they pierced him in the side?
Oh-oh-oh-oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble
Were you there when they pierced him in the side?

Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
Oh-oh-oh-oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
